Achter ons digitale bestaan gaat een verbijsterende wereld van verbruik schuil. Met behulp van telefoons en laptops vergaderen en mailen we er op los - maar tegen welke prijs? Exacte cijfers zijn moeilijk te krijgen maar Joppe van Driel maakte voor ons de volgende vergelijking: een gemiddelde Netflix gebruiker kijkt per dag 3,2 uur lang(!) series en films. Als je dit vermenigvuldigd met het aantal gebruikers staat dat gelijk aan de CO2 emissies van 2,3 miljoen huishoudens! In deze aflevering van de Green Office reeks bespreken we circulariteit binnen de ICT beleid van overheden met Joppe van Driel en Stefan Rigter. Joppe is Program Developer Circularity in Urban Regions bij AMS Institute. Stefan Rigter is werkzaam bij de Green Office van Gemeente Amsterdam, waar hij zich onder andere bezig houdt met het verbeteren van het inkoopbeleid op het gebied van ICT. Wat moeten we verbeteren binnen het inkoopbeleid van overheden, wat gaat er fout bij het ontwerpen en gebruiken van hardware en welke winst valt te behalen bij het schrijven van efficiënte codes?

Wat komt er kijken bij een het verduurzamen een organisatie als dat er een is met duizenden werknemers, grote ambities en de verplichting hierin een koploper te zijn? Dat is de centrale vraag in de 5-delige serie die wij produceren in samenwerking met de Green Office van de Gemeente Amsterdam. In de komende vijf afleveringen onderzoeken we de hoe de eigen organisatie kan verduurzamen. We bespreken onderwerpen als impact meten en impact maken, activisme, methoden voor verduurzaming en de uitdagingen die daarmee gepaard gaan. Emma Kropman, Scipio Kok en Jaleesa Schaap spreken met experts, activistische ambtenaren, ambtenaren die zich verantwoordelijk voelen en ambtenaren die uiteindelijk verantwoordelijk zijn. Vandaag hebben we het over impact meten. Wat betekent het meten van impact en waarom is het belangrijk? Wist je bijvoorbeeld dat 10% van de gezamenlijke Nederlandse CO2 uitstoot veroorzaakt wordt door uitgaven van de overheid? Om dit te verminderen heeft de Stad Amsterdam doelen gesteld om in 2050 klimaatneutraal en 100% circulair te zijn. Maar wat betekenen deze doelstellingen als je niet weet waar je nu staat en welke keuze de grootste impact heeft? Judith werkt als adviseur duurzaamheid en Daan is medeverantwoordelijk voor de materiaalstroomanalyse die is uitgevoerd voor gemeente Amsterdam. Athens, Melbourne, Freetown and Los Angeles share the uncomfortable honor of being the first cities to appoint a Chief Heat Officer in the fight against Urban Heat Stress. This week we share a second conversation with a Chief Heat Officer about this silent urban killer in need of equitable solutions. Our guest is Marta Segura, director of the Los Angeles Climate Emergency Mobilization Office and Chief Heat Officer. Marta takes us back to the beginning of her career as an environmental justice advocate which began around the time she finished graduate school and has its roots in childhood experiences of displacement and environmental assaults on her community. In this podcast she shares her experience on the use of climate vulnerability assessment and public buildings as resilience hubs and the importance of involving the community in designing equitable climate solutions. Urban heat stress has been identified as a consequence of climate change and a major cause of harmful changes in the urban climate. The negative impact in cities ranges from economic, social, environmental to public health. We talk about this deadly urban challenge with Eleni Myrivili, one of the world’s first Chief Heat Officers. Eleni takes us to the City of Athens as she explains how heat stress impacts daily life, what research is currently undertaken, what solutions are available and most important, what measures should be taken today. This week we welcome Stephen Lorimer and Paul Voskuilen for a conversation about urban energy systems. Stephen works as manager for the Clean Energy Cities program at the Centre for Net Zero. He focuses on cities as accelerators of the energy transition through the building of future energy systems. Paul Voskuilen works as the programme developer Urban Energy at the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions. He is responsible for exploring, initiating and developing relevant energy projects in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, connecting science, business and practice. With global uncertainty in the energy market as a backdrop and winter approaching, we discuss challenges and opportunities for the future of urban energy systems. The global uncertainty and price increase might act as an accelerator for the transition towards renewable energy. How can cities seize the opportunity rather than solely suffering the consequences of the risks involved. Urban infrastructure, urban consumers and business models might not yet be ready for an accelerated shift towards new energy systems. So what advice do Stephen and Paul offer Mayor’s globally?
